Reporting to the Manager of Planning & Development, the Development Officer is responsible for ensuring that planning, development, and safety (building) code regulations are properly administered in the Town of Peace River. We are looking for someone who places customer service as a high priority, is detail oriented, can meet deadlines, understands municipal planning frameworks, and wants to be an active participant in making Peace River grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer the building permit process, with the Town’s contracted Accredited Agency to ensure Alberta Building Code regulations and Safety Code Council requirements are met.
  • Process and issue decisions in accordance with established processes and legislation for development permit applications, certificates of compliance, and other land use applications as directed by the Manager
  • Support the processing of subdivision applications in accordance with established processes and legislation as directed by the Manager of Planning & Development.
  • Manage confidential, proprietary, or commercially sensitive materials, applications, and inquiries with appropriate levels of discretion.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary education in Land Use Planning or related disciplines, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Must be computer literate with strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Must have a clean Criminal Record Check.
  • Strong, confident, and clear communication abilities in both written and spoken English.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience in a municipal planning and development environment is an asset;
  • To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform the duties to a high degree of quality, timeliness and precision.
  • Experience and understanding of community planning practices, principles and procedures, land use planning legislation, land use planning preparation, public participation processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and focus on customer service excellence.
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Full Time • Permanent Employment

  • Salary: $73,936—$92,846
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (evening and weekend work as required)
