    Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

    COVID-19 has clearly affected our lives in significant ways and may impact the rules or processes around the upcoming municipal election.

    For example, Minister Allard signed a Ministerial Order on December 14, 2020, permitting candidates to pay their deposits by debit or credit card in addition to the cash, certified cheque or money order options prescribed within LAEA.

    Because of the uncertainty around the pandemic, the Town has created this candidate page to distribute and share information with candidates and will contain the following information:

    Important Dates

    Nomination Day: September 20, 2021 – by noon

    Advance Votes: Friday, October 8, 2021 – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Misery Mountain Ski Lodge (10408 89 Street), Saturday, October 9, 2021 – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Misery Mountain Ski Lodge (10408 89 Street).

    Institutional Vote: An opportunity for residents of Heritage Towers Lodge and Points West Living to vote in advance in their buildings. Institutional votes are only available to residents of those two locations and are not open to the public or to facility staff.

    Election Day: Monday, October 18, 2021 – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Misery Mountain Ski Lodge (10408 89 Street).

    Key Post-Election Dates

    If you have – or are considering – submitting your nomination papers, there are some key post-election dates to keep in mind:

    Monday, November 1: Swearing in – the Council-elect will swear the Oath of Office. They will also state for the Minutes that they have read and will abide by Council’s Code of Conduct. Once this is complete, the Organizational Meeting will take place.

    Organizational Meeting – Council will review the Committees of Council and appoint members to those Committees. Council’s annual calendar of Council Meetings will also be ratified at this meeting. A Governance and Priorities Meeting will follow.

    Friday November 5 and Saturday November 6: Council Orientation – This is an overview of the duties of Council, an introduction to senior staff, presentations on Town operations and current Town matters. This includes a driving tour of various Town facilities.

    No later than January 30, 2022: Completion of the Municipal Elected Officials Roles in Emergency Management course. This is online and is a 2-4 hour commitment. Completion of this course is a legislated requirement.

    No later than January 30, 2022: Per the Code of Conduct, all members of Council are required to attend the Munis 101 course. This is a two-day training event. https://eoep.ca/events/munis-101/
