Volunteer With The Vision Learning Center

The Vision Learning Center is looking for learning tutor/coaches for adult learners in literacy, numeracy, basic computers, foundational life skills and English as a Second Language.

When a learner first comes to the Vision Learning Center, they meet a Learning Facilitator (Literacy Foundational Learning or English as a Second Language). Our Learning Facilitator helps identify learning goals then designs a workable, step-by-step learning plan with appropriate resources. Some learners benefit greatly from one-on-one tutor/coaching for a period of time and this is where YOU can help. Volunteer tutor/coaches typically spend 1 to 3 hours a week with a dedicated learner for as short a period as a few sessions or extending through the Learning Centre operating year (mid-September through mid-June, closed for Christmas and Easter school breaks).

Volunteers are supported by their learner’s Facilitator, who will suggest learning resources and provide tips and ideas for you to help your learner as well as help sort through any challenges that may arise. The Learning Centre also provides some professional development and periodic opportunities for volunteer tutor/coaches to meet and share ideas. They also offer a recognition and rewards program for their volunteer team.

Current volunteer needs:

We need board members! A few of our board members are stepping down from our board due to changes in their availability which leaves room for new people with fresh ideas! If you have a heart for Peace River or education we would love to have you join our board!

We need volunteers for basic computers (very basic day to day tasks most of us take for granted) as well as Microsoft Word and Google Chrome Instructors.

A couple of learners are looking for help with basic numeracy and math skills, for personal finance management, for daily living and for the workplace.

Several of our ESL learners are looking for someone to practice speaking and listening English a few hours a week. This could be over coffee or shared activities (from going for walks or snow-shoeing or skating to crafting, quilting or making art or even hanging out with your kids at Peace Playland).

And there are learners for whom accident, illness or age has forced them to retrain for a new career, who would really benefit from having someone help them navigate the various agencies and online sites to explore what is needed to get them started on their new journey.

Vision Learning Centre learners vary in age, needs and skill levels. Helping them work towards and achieve their goals is an extremely rewarding experience. You will truly see the difference that you are making in their lives and in our community.
