Breakup of Smoky & Heart Rivers

Posted April 19, 2020

The Town is in contact with Alberta Environment and Parks and we are continuing to monitor the river. Please see the update below from Alberta Environment and Parks.

“As temperatures continue to warm in the coming days, water levels in the Smoky River and nearby tributaries are expected to continue to rise. A dynamic breakup of the Smoky River is forecast for early this week. As high flows and ice runs push out of the Smoky River and into the Peace River, water levels at the Town of Peace River will increase suddenly. As the ice runs from the Smoky River move downstream, they may destabilize the ice cover on the Peace River, causing ice jams and greatly accelerating the breakup of the Peace River.”
