Combined resources extinguish residential fire overnight

Peace River, AB – At approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the Peace River Fire Department and Weberville Fire Department responded to a call of a residential fire in the north end of town.

Fire Chief Tim Harris also sent a mutual aid request to Northern Sunrise County for fire services, and St. Isidore Fire Department provided a fire engine and crew.

Fifteen firefighters attended the scene, working over the next four to five hours to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading beyond the three impacted homes.

One house was completely destroyed. Two others suffered significant damage. A few firefighters suffered minor injuries, but no other injuries have been reported.

This fire was the first time the PRFD actioned its new ladder truck on a structure fire, which proved very beneficial in getting quick control of the fire, despite windy conditions pushing the flames toward other structures.

As of Tuesday morning, the fire is still an active scene. We ask the public to avoid the area out of respect for the people who lost their homes and to allow responding personnel to complete their work. An investigation into the cause of the fire will be taking place once the scene has been stabilized.
