Permanent Road Closure

A permanent road closure closes a portion of a public roadway or road allowance and creates privately titled real property that may be developed. The MGA grants the municipality (or other road authority) the ability to request the closure of a ‘road’ that they have determined is no longer needed for public travel.

To permanently close a road, a road closure bylaw must be adopted by Town Council and approved by Alberta Transportation. The newly created title may be held by the Town or sold to a private entity. If a private entity desires to buy the land from the Town a sales agreement must be negotiated and signed by the Town and the applicant.
