Information for Voters

To vote in the 2025 municipal election in Peace River, you must be: 

• At least 18 years of age; 
• A Canadian citizen; and,
• A resident of the Town of Peace River on the day that you vote.

(section 47 of the LAEA)

What do you need to prove you are eligible to vote?

Every person who attends a voting station in Peace River who wishes to vote, must

• be on the permanent electors register, and
• provide one piece of identification issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial, or local, or an agency of that government, that contains your photograph

OR

• complete a statement in the prescribed form adding you to the permanent electors register, and
• validate your identity and address by providing:
  • one piece of identification issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial or local, or an agency of that government, that contains your photograph, name, and address of residence
  • provide two pieces of ID*, both containing your full name, and with one showing your current physical address
    • another elector may vouch for your address only, by completing the prescribed form provided at the voting station.

If you are using two pieces of ID from the options above, there are many different types you can use:

Previously, a person who was unable to provide sufficient documentation to prove their eligibility to vote could become eligible by having another person vouch for them to validate their identity and residence.

However, the legislation has changed. Now, individuals MUST be able to provide identification that validates their identity; however, they may have another person vouch for their address of residence.

When can't you vouch for someone?

• you have relied on someone else to vouch for your address
• you have already vouched for someone else (exception: you may vouch for more than one person if each person you vouch for shares the same place of residence)
• your name is not already contained on the permanent electors register 

How do I vouch for someone's address?

A person who vouches for another person must make a statement, in the prescribed form (provided at the voting station), that 

• they know the person they are vouching for,
• they know that the person resides at the address provided, and
• they have not relied on another person to validate their own address.

An eligible voter must submit a request to the Returning Officer for a special ballot. Requests for special ballots can only be submitted from Friday, August 1, 2025 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.  

Eligible voters requesting a special ballot are required to make the request using the Request for Special Ballot Package (Form 22). The request cannot be made by another individual on the eligible voter’s behalf.

The Request for Special Ballots Package must be submitted in-person at the Town Office or via email to legislativeservices@peaceriver.ca.

When submitting your request, you may choose to have the special ballot package: 

• Mailed to your home address,
• Mailed to an alternate address (E.g., for those working away, at school, on vacation, etc.), 
  • Packages mailed internationally and to remote locations in Canada will take more 
    time for delivery. Electors in these areas should request their package as soon as 
    possible to allow time for delivery.
• Picked up from the Town Office, or
• Picked up by a designate at the Town Office.
   

Review the special ballot package and the instructions. Make sure that you have received:

• Applicable  requested Special Ballots and their envelope(s)
• A Special Ballot Certificate Envelope (Form 25) 
• A Return Envelope 
• Instructions for how to complete your Special Ballot

If anything is missing or if you have questions, please contact the Returning Officer.

Just like in a voting station, you will complete the ballot(s) by marking an “X” next to the name of the candidate(s) you wish to vote for. 

Special Ballots are the same as in-person ballots. You will be required to clearly make your mark beside the candidate(s) you wish to cast your vote for within the limits stated on the ballot. 

Assemble and return your package.

• Place only the ballot(s) in the respective ballot envelopes and seal them. 
• Make a copy of your identification proving your name and current residential address. 
• Review and sign the Special Ballot Certificate Envelope that was sent with your package.
• Place each ballot envelope into the signed Special Ballot Certificate Envelope (Form 25) 
  and seal the envelope.
• Place a copy of your identification and the sealed Special Ballot Certificate Envelope 
  (Form 25) into the Return Envelope and seal it. 
• Mail or return the Return Envelope to the Town Office on or before October 17, 2025 @ 4:30 p.m.

Please Note: Any special ballot packages that are incorrect, incomplete, or received after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, will NOT be accepted or counted.

When your special ballot package is received at the Town Office, the Returning Officer will open the Special Ballot Certificate Envelope to confirm that you have signed the declaration and sent in a copy of your identification. 

Once these documents are confirmed, your sealed ballot envelope will be placed in a ballot 
box. Special ballots are counted on election day.
