Three requests for grants to organizations led off the April 8, 2024 Town of Peace River council meeting.
Celebrating 25 years championing music in the community, the Underground Music Society is looking for funding assistance for its May 25th gala.
Next, Peace River Rotaract showed off their plans for a three-day event downtown this July for Rotaract River Days – with a possibility of achieving a world record for wearing plaid, as noted by Coun. Marc Boychuk.
Finally, the Peace River Community Events Society sought funding for a music festival in the downtown core that would have Indigenous and western Canadian performers.
At the previous week’s governance and priorities meeting, council also heard grant requests from Peace River Minor Football, which is aiming to install a new food booth; and Ecole Des Quatre-Vents, which requested a donation for the construction of a new school playground.
Also at the April 8 council meeting, Apex Security presented about their public security unit in Grande Prairie. In communication with bylaw officers and local RCMP, the organization provides security services that deal primarily with social disorder and street issues. Note, this was only a presentation from the company describing its services, and council has made no decision or motion on the matter.
Council passed second and third readings of Bylaw No. 2151 – the Camping Bylaw. This gives the Town authority for dealing with camping on Town property and allows the RCMP and/or Peace Officers to assist with the removal of individuals or groups camping in public spaces.
Resulting from the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design report presented last spring, larger flower planters along main street will be replaced with flower pots whose design deters sitting or sleeping. Work will take place this summer.
Pat Fisher, Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, presented a snapshot of major capital work taking place or planned in the near future. That included trail connection in Saddleback, town hall accessibility, main street sidewalk replacement, 90 Street stormwater culvert repair and more Neighbourhood Infrastructure Renewal work.
