Spring Breakup Update 1
A RADARSAT satellite image located the Peace River ice front at km 331 (65 km upstream of the Highway 2 bridge in the Town of Peace River), at 7:22 MST on March 20.
With seasonal temperatures last week, the Peace River ice front has begun its spring retreat. The retreat began slowly last week, but has accelerated with the steady warm weather. Since March 15, the average rate of retreat has been approximately 4.5 km/day. The colder weather on March 19 and March 20 is expected to slow down the retreat for a day or so, but with seasonal temperatures in the forecast this week, the ice front is expected to maintain a steady retreat. If the weather remains seasonal, breakup may occur in the Town of Peace River near the end of March or very early in April. For this time of year, the ice front is on average approximately 75 km upstream of its current position.
