At the February 27, 2023 public meeting, Council approved first reading of the Solid Waste Bylaw, which includes a proposed rate increase of $6 (from $19/month to $25/month). More information was presented to Council at the Governance and Priorities Meeting on March 6.
Half of the rate change ($3) would fund an increase in service levels provided to residents, specifically for a yard waste drop-off location that will be available from May through October.
The other half of the proposed rate change is to start building a reserve fund that would help fund additional service level increases to meet local residents’ needs, or to shoulder unexpected operating deficits.
Offsetting this proposed rate change, a $29/month Regional Waste Management Levy has been removed from residents’ bills, which means that if Council approves the proposed rate change, the average household will see an reduction of approximately $15 on their monthly bill.
Following first reading, Council will have the opportunity to vote on second (and potentially third) reading of the bylaw on Monday, March 12, 2023.
