Gauge records indicate that the Peace River ice front advanced past Sunny Valley in the evening yesterday (around 18:00 MST). Sunny Valley is located at km 491 and is 95 km downstream of the Town of Peace River. The Peace River ice front has advanced very rapidly in the cold temperatures over the last week – moving approximately 29 km/day since December 25. Temperatures are forecast to increase rapidly tomorrow, with daily highs around -10. This increase in temperature is expected to dramatically reduce the speed of the Peace River ice front advance, and may cause consolidations at the leading edge of the ice front.
Alberta Environment and Parks, and BC Hydro are in contact regarding river ice conditions and operation of the BC Hydro Peace River facilities.
