December 27, 2017
A Sentinel satellite image located the Peace River ice front at km 638 on December 25 at 18:31 MST (approximately 240 km downstream of the Town of Peace River). Temperatures have dropped dramatically in the past week and ice production on the Peace River has ramped up in response. The ice front turned around sometime around December 19th, and began advancing upstream again. The ice front passed through Carcajou over the weekend, and is now heading south towards Peace River. So far the advance has been steady around 11 km/day since December 20th, but the rate of advance is expected to increase with the very below seasonal temperatures this week (and in the forecast for the coming weekend).
Alberta Environment and Parks, and BC Hydro are in contact regarding river ice conditions and operation of the BC Hydro Peace River facilities.
