April 6, 2018
A RADARSAT satellite image has located the Peace River ice front at km 349 (47 km upstream of the Highway 2 bridge in the Town of Peace River) at 7:10 MST on April 5. Cold temperatures last week and over the weekend have kept the retreat of the Peace River ice front slow. Since the weekend, the ice front has been retreating at an average rate of around 3 km/day. Temperatures are forecast to stay below average over the coming weekend but are warmer compared to last week. As next week begins, temperatures are expected to warm to near seasonal levels. As temperatures begin to increase, the rate of retreat of the Peace River ice front will increase as well. With daily highs remaining below freezing over the weekend, significant melting of the snowpack in the Peace River and Smoky River basins is not expected.

Alberta Environment and Parks, and BC Hydro are in contact regarding river ice conditions and operation of the BC Hydro Peace River facilities.
