Downtown Mural #2
Sep. 8, 2017
Downtown Peace River got a little bit more colourful this summer.
For the second year in a row the Town of Peace River, through a public committee, selected an artist to beautify a wall downtown as part of the Town’s Downtown Beautification Program. In late winter-2016 the Town of Peace River issued a call for committee members and for ideas. Seeking community input, not just on the artist, but also the medium, style, and content. A number of entries were considered and in the end, the committee decided on Shannon Brown and her concept.
Special thanks is owed to the owners of Boston Pizza, who graciously allowed their wall to be the canvas for this beautiful mural. We’d like to thank this community-minded business for helping us bring colour and art to downtown Peace River.
About the Artist
Shannon Brown was raised in Peace River and northern Alberta, she graduated from Glenmary High School in 2005. Over the last decade, she has traveled the world visiting countries like New Zealand, Iceland, and Thailand. She also has lived in various places across Canada. A fine arts graduate, she completed her four year Fine Arts degree in Halifax NS, while spending her summers working in the Yukon. Although she is fascinated by immersing herself in new surroundings, Northern Alberta has always remained one of her favourite places.
About the Art
Shannon’s mural on the south side of Boston Pizza is an ode to her love of the Peace Region. It emphasizes the natural vegetation and local plant life of the area by showcasing the Alberta Rose, Prickly Pear cactus, Crocuses, Saskatoons and Goats Beard along the bottom of the mural. A crab apple tree dominates the centre, inspired by the one that is still growing in her old backyard, with a magpie watched by an irritated fox.
The tree also splits up the scene and the season. On the left there is a landscape of the town of Peace River at night with the crabapples turning red in Autumn and the other half is farmers wheat fields with Alberta’s famous blue skies and apple blossoms in spring.
Shannon hopes that viewers relate to the vibrancy and the pleasant scene depicted on the mural and that they see the beauty of the town reflected back at them.
About Downtown Beautification
Peace River’s Downtown Beautification plan was initiated in 2015 to complement downtown revitalization efforts. Since then the plan has resulted in the winter trees that are installed in main street boulevards throughout the winter, the streetlight banner program, which has since been expanded to include banners that honour veterans, as well as banners celebrating Canada, and there was a previous mural installed downtown in 2016. Next the Town will be installing combination garbage and recycling bins throughout downtown and well as repairing the decorative streetlights that have been damaged near the traffic circle. The Downtown Beautification plan is available on our approved plans and bylaws page, linked below.
