Town Council October 11, 2016 regular meeting

Significant updates from the regular meeting of Peace River Town Council are below. You can view the agenda and all Council items here.

Photo Radar Won’t be Renewed

While the program has provided local law enforcement with an additional tool in their enforcement toolkit, Council decided not to extend the contract with Global Traffic Group. To date about $160,000 was raised through the program – this money will be allocated by council during the 2017 budget process towards a public safety measure.

In the spring of 2014 the Town of Peace River signed an agreement with Global Traffic Group to provide 48 hours a week of photo/radar enforcement within the Town; this service was expanded in 2016 to include rolling stop violations at stop sign locations.

More details are available in the request for decision.

Appointment of Fire Chief

Following a motion by Council, Tim Harris, has been made the Interim Fire Chief for the Peace River Fire Department. Harris is a demonstrated leader, who has worked for the department for a number of years as the Deputy Chief of Operations. He will provide leadership to the department over the next few months as the Town will begin looking for a new full time Fire Chief and Manager of Protective Services in December 2016.

Peace Officer Services

Council also authorized administration to investigate the possibility of hiring a Peace Officer. In addition to speed enforcement, Peace Officers can address bylaw concerns and provide greater levels of public education. Full details are available in the request for decision.
